Pennies Add Up: Slot Change Raises Over 100k for Local Charities

Money to go to Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Honor Flight Nevada, and local chapters of the

American Cancer Society & Make a Wish Foundation

Reno, NV – The loose change that Atlantis guests have donated when redeeming their slot machine tickets now totals more than $100,000 in charitable donations.  When guests redeem their slot tickets into the kiosk, they are asked if they want to donate their extra change on the dollar to Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Honor Flight Nevada, the American Cancer Society, Great West Division, and Make a Wish of Northeastern California and Northern Nevada.  For example, if their ticket is for $24.61, they have the option of donating the extra 61 cents to a charity if they choose.

The program started in March of 2018, and 18 months later, has hit the $100,000 mark.  These charitable donations are especially significant during the pandemic.  For example, more families than ever before are now turning to the Food Bank for help, and one in five children in Nevada is hungry.  September is Hunger Action Month, and the local food bank has been seeing a sharp increase in the lines at distribution.   

“We are so grateful for this wonderful partnership with the Atlantis,” said Jocelyn Lantrip, director of marketing and communications at the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.  “These donations really add up to help many families facing hunger, especially right now, when demand for emergency food services is so very high.”

“We’re not surprised by the generosity of our guests, but I think we were surprised by how fast that loose change added up,” said Wayne Archer, assistant director of slot operations.  “It’s just so humbling that loose change can have such a positive impact here in our community.”

Atlantis hopes to hit $150,000 in these charitable donations from loose change by the end of the year.
